Center for Clean Air Policy is Awarded Grant from Rockefeller Foundation to Help Local Communities Build Resiliency to Climate Change Impacts

March 18, 2008The Rockefeller Foundation has made a grant of $900,000 over three years to support the next phase of the Center for Clean Air Policy (CCAP) Urban Leaders Adaptation Initiative.  The program will assist nine partner cities and counties in making effective policy and investment decisions to increase their resiliency to the impacts of climate change and to educate key audiences on adaptation. Local governments are the “first responders” to social and economic disruptions resulting from natural disasters and must anticipate, prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change while also minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

"In the coming years and decades, climate change will become a key factor in infrastructure development and a host of planning and policy decisions," said CCAP President Ned Helme. "It is critical that private entities and governments at all levels start integrating adaptation considerations into their regular decision making processes.  The Urban Leaders Adaptation Initiative will equip CCAP's partners with the knowledge and tools to get started on implementing adaptation measures and provide a framework for policy issues that will enable the federal government to support local resiliency efforts."

Center for Clean Air Policy Says Transportation Provisions and Smart Growth are Vital to Preventing Impacts of Climate Change

Feb. 7 and 8, 2008 – Achieving the 60-80 percent reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change requires that federal climate and transportation legislation establishes cleaner vehicles and fuels and reduce the rapid increase in the amount Americans drive each year. At the New Partners for Smart Growth Conference -- hosted by the Local Government Commission -- CCAP Transportation Program Director Steve Winkelman explored these issues.

Center for Clean Air Policy Tackles Transportation in Climate Policy

Jan.17, 2008 – Trends in carbon emissions from the transportation sector dictate that vehicles, fuels and the increasing amount Americans drive each year — due to sprawling land use patterns and limited transportation options — all need to be addressed in federal legislation to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.  CCAP Transportation Program Director Steve Winkelman explored these issues today at a Senate staff briefing hosted by the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.
