Methane Mitigation Research Assistant

The Center for Clean Air Policy (CCAP) is a nongovernmental nonprofit that promotes ambitious climate action globally. Based in Washington DC with staff around the world, we help policymakers worldwide develop, promote, and implement innovative, market-based solutions to major climate problems that balance both environmental and economic interests.

Position Description

 

The research assistant will support CCAP’s international climate work. S/he will provide research, analysis, and report-writing support for CCAP’s projects focused on climate change mitigation policies. S/he will have the opportunity to contribute to research on important climate and energy topics, potentially including policies to support international climate change mitigation commitments, carbon markets, climate finance, and methane mitigation strategies. The research assistant will have contact with policymakers and other experts and will participate in cutting-edge climate change policy work.

Responsibilities Include: 

​

  • Research and quantitative analysis on developing countries' climate, energy and sector-specific mitigation policies.

  • Policy analysis and writing for reports, issue briefs, proposals, fact sheets, blogs, etc.

  • Interaction with outside technical consultants, policymakers and other stakeholders on various assignments.

  • Preparation of presentations and other materials for meetings and conferences.

  • Conference support, including outreach to participants, logistical support, and managing registration database.

The research assistant will support one or more project areas, for example: 
 

  • Methane Mitigation – Research and synthesize international and domestic methane mitigation frameworks and policies. Support in drafting thematic reports and publications and preparing workshop materials (e.g., concept/background note, ppt)    

  • Circular Economy - Research circular economy and waste-to-resource projects and regulations in developing countries and develop best practice regulatory approaches, with a focus on promoting circularity and emissions reductions in the waste sector. Assist in evaluating existing barriers to project development and recommending workable strategies to overcome the barriers and reducing emissions. 

  • International climate policy – Perform literature review of actionable SLCP mitigation strategies for countries to refine and achieve goals of NDC 3.0.

  • Community of Practice – Accelerate progress to reduce methane emissions from the waste sector in Latin America and the Caribbean by facilitating peer-to-peer learning, providing technical support and promoting knowledge exchange among relevant actor
     

The position is available immediately for six-month duration, with the possibility to become permanent depending on performance. CCAP offers a competitive salary and benefits package, based on the individual’s qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:
 

This is an ideal position for a recent college or grad school graduate with 1-2 years of experience, looking to work on international climate policy at a cutting edge, non-profit organization. The successful candidate will be able to learn quickly on the job, work independently, and manage multiple tasks. Specific qualifications include:
 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in environmental policy, international relations, political science, economics, environmental science or related field.

  • Coursework or experience in environmental, climate, and energy policy required. Coursework in methane mitigation, circular economy and waste management a plus.

  • Excellent research and writing skills required.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Complete fluency in English required.

  • Fluency or professional proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese and or French strongly preferred. 

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and timeliness with deadlines.

  • Quantitative skills, including understanding of business models and ROI

  • Experience with Microsoft Office including: Teams, Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
