Climate Policy Associate:

Spanish Speaking Methane Specialist

Based in Washington DC with staff around the world, we help policymakers worldwide develop, promote, and implement innovative, market-based solutions to major climate problems that balance both environmental and economic interests.

Position Description

 

The Climate Policy Associate will support CCAP’s international methane mitigation and climate change work with a focus on policy and mitigation action. S/he will provide research, analysis, report-writing, and conference-preparation support for CCAP’s on-the-ground projects focused on climate change mitigation. S/he will have the opportunity to contribute to research on important climate, waste and circular economy topics, including policies, tools and programs to support waste sector transformation, international climate change mitigation commitments, and climate finance. The Policy Associate will have contact with high-level, developing-country policymakers and other experts and will participate in cutting-edge climate change policy work.

Responsibilities Include: 

​

  • Research and quantitative analysis on developing-country climate and methane mitigation policies and projects. 

  • Working with national/local governments in policy or project development 

  • Policy analysis and writing for reports, issue briefs, proposals, best practice case studies, fact sheets, blogs, etc. 

  • Interaction with outside technical consultants, high-level policymakers, and key stakeholders on various assignments. 

  • Preparation of presentations and other materials for international meetings and conferences. 

  • Conference support, including to participants, logistical support, and managing registration database

The policy associate will support one or more specific projects, such as: 
 

  • Organic Waste Management in SIDS – Work with Environment and Climate Change Canada and international partners to assist small island developing countries across Latin America and the Caribbean to live up to their commitments in the Global Methane Pledge and accelerate implementation of new regulation, methane emission reduction initiatives and on-the-ground projects that will help contribute to eliminating over 0.2ËšC warming by 2050.

  • Accelerating Methane Mitigation Actions in Latin America – Work with the Climate and Clean Air Coalition and key country partners in Latin America to advance waste sector policy packages and methane mitigation projects that will accelerate emissions reductions in the region and help countries achieve their NDCs.

  • Community of Practice - Work with LEDS LAC to accelerate progress to reduce methane emissions from the waste sector in Latin America and the Caribbean by facilitating peer-to-peer learning, providing technical support and promoting knowledge exchange among relevant actors.
     

The position is available immediately for six-month duration, with the possibility to become permanent depending on performance. CCAP offers competitive salary and benefits packages, based on the individual’s qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:
 

This is an ideal position for a graduate school graduate with 5+ years of experience, looking to work on international climate policy at a cutting edge, non-profit organization. The successful candidate will be able to learn quickly on the job, work independently, and manage multiple tasks. Specific qualifications include: 
 

  • Master’s degree in environmental policy, international relations, political science, economics, environmental science or related field. 

  • Coursework or experience in environmental, climate, and energy policy required. Coursework in methane mitigation, circular economy and waste management a plus. 

  • Excellent research and writing skills. 

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Fluency in English required. 

  • Experience working with national/local governments in policy or project development in the waste sector a plus 

  • Fluency or professional proficiency in Spanish, including the ability to speak and write to policy audiences, required.

  • Fluency or professional proficiency in French and/or Portuguese a plus.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and timeliness with deadlines. 

  • Quantitative skills, including understanding of business models and ROI, a plus.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office including: Teams, Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
