CCAC Municipal Solid Waste Initiative- City Network Launch and Workshop
4.24.17 - 4.25.17
CCAP was selected by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) to organize the first CCAC Regional City Network for South America and Mexico focused on municipal solid waste management and the reduction of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs). To launch the City Network, CCAP organized a Waste Management Workshop in Santiago de Chile, on April 24-25, alongside the 20th CCAC Working Group and Science-Policy Dialogue.
Cities are some of the most important partners in addressing the complex set of issues that arise from the management of municipal solid waste and this event offered participating cities training and support specifically tailored to the unique challenges faced by Latin American cities, and the opportunity to learn from shared experiences of partners in the region.
The event brought together over 70 participants, including municipal solid waste experts, international and regional development bank representatives, private sector waste operators, and 30 waste sector representatives from 22 cities and municipalities across eight Latin American countries.
The workshop served as an opportunity to engage decision makers and private sector representatives on the importance of reducing emissions from the solid waste sector, sharing best practices (both at the municipal and national levels) that have been successfully used by others to advance the mitigation of short-lived climate pollutants and to accelerate the implementation of sustainable waste management projects and practices, emphasizing the opportunities around public-private collaboration.
The South America and Mexico City Network will carry this engagement forward through a series of webinars on key issues that were highlighted by cities at the event as being of particular interest, including source separation and organic waste management, cost recovery mechanisms, public-private partnerships and financing for project implementation.
The network will be closely linked with waste experts from around the world, including from CCAP, the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and the International Solid Waste Association, among others. Latin American Cities seeking to join the City Network should reach out to Brooks Shaffer (email@example.com) and Gerardo Canales (firstname.lastname@example.org).
